The Visitors Struck Hard in the Second Half
Manchester City fully exploited their hosts’ numerical disadvantage to secure a 3-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday, as part of the sixth matchday of the English Premier League.
With this victory, City strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League, maintaining a 100% record with 18 points from 6 matches, while Liverpool remained on 9 points in ninth place.
The first half saw a moderate performance from both sides, ending in a goalless draw, but the visitors swept the hosts away in the second half.
In the 62nd minute, Reds midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. City needed no more than three minutes following the red card to score their opening goal through Erling Haaland, who struck powerfully from inside the penalty area.
Quickly, in the 65th minute, Belgian substitute Jérémy Doku added the second goal with a brilliant shot, before Frenchman Rayan Cherki rounded off the scoring to make it 3-0 in the 78th minute after a superb dribble past Reds defender Jérémy Jacquet.
Today’s match was City’s first since an independent commission found them guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules over a 9-year period—a ruling the club has appealed.
Manchester City is now preparing to host French side Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium, in the opening phase of the UEFA Champions League.
