US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Morocco’s Tiznit-Dakhla expressway would be named after him, thanking King Mohammed VI and calling the decision a “great honour.”

Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, saying he hoped to travel the full length of the road in the near future.

The Tiznit-Dakhla route extends for more than 1,000 kilometres along Morocco’s Atlantic coast, passing through Guelmim, Tan-Tan, Laayoune and Boujdour before reaching Dakhla.

Morocco launched the project in 2015 as part of a broader development program for the southern provinces. The road became fully operational in January 2025 following years of construction and upgrades, with a total cost estimated at around 10 billion dirhams.

The expressway is intended to improve road safety, reduce travel times and strengthen commercial links between central Morocco and the southern provinces. Its southern end is also expected to support access to the Dakhla Atlantic Port, a major infrastructure project under construction and scheduled to begin operations later this decade.

Trump ended his message by thanking King Mohammed VI and saying he hoped to drive the entire route “soon.”
